Course Description:
American History I will provide students with an understanding of the historical development of the United States. While surveying the history of the United States we will study the economic, political, social, and cultural changes that have occurred from its discovery to the Civil War and Reconstruction.
Course Objectives:
1. Obtain specific information from graphs, charts, and tables.
2. Locate sources of information that are relevant, current, and reliable.
3. Improve writing and other communication skills.
4. Demonstrate improved abilities in oral presentation through class discussion and presentations.
5. Recognize major events in chronological order.
6. Locate places and features on maps and globes.
7. Demonstrate knowledge of selected events and personalities that have had a significant impact on the growth and development of the United States.
8. Describe the interactions between Native Americans and various groups who explored and settled in the United States.
9. Evaluate the importance of the discovery, exploration, and early settlement of America.
10. Explain changes in Europe that led to the beginnings of exploration in America.
11. Understand grievances that led to the revolt of the colonies against British rule.
12. Describe the major events and outcomes of the Revolutionary War.
13. Explain the drafting of the U.S. Constitution and examine its effects on the formation of a new nation.
14. Interpret the U.S. Constitution and its relevance today.
